Dealing With Teen Bipolar Disorder
Michalis Kotzakolios

Have you experienced extreme mood swings? Are these shifts in your emotional state preceded and followed by extreme feelings of either elation or depression? Are these shifts in your emotional state precipitated by no reasons whatsoever... they just happen? Do you mood swings affect your level of activity? Do you find yourself hyperactive one moment, and totally out of it the next?

If your answer to all the questions above is "yes," then chances are, you're experiencing bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder is a mental condition that causes extreme mood swings for no apparent reason. This can be perilous, as such extreme shifts in one's emotions can lead to ruined relationships, missed opportunities, stunted emotional growth, and in certain cases, physical harm. Teen bipolar disorder is even more dangerous, as it concerns adolescents who are already experiencing some turbulent times caused by hormonal and societal changes.

Indeed, dealing with teen bipolar disorder can be challenging, but it can be conquered. If you're a parent, a guardian, a family member or a friend of a teenager who is suffering from bipolar disorder, you'd need to muster three important things to help him or her iron out her emotional trials. These things are:

1. Commitment. Teen bipolar disorder will be a tough nut to crack, in a manner of speaking. The malady itself is multiplied by the rebellious streak prevalent during the puberty years. Dealing with such a teenager will test your perseverance, but you have to continue to strive to make him or her see the right path.

2. Patience. Teen bipolar disorder is not really chronic, but it is nonetheless continual. There will be times when the subject will refuse to listen to reason. Nonetheless, you should never give up. Even if you'd count the times when you'd fail to reach the subject as failures, there is victory in the horizon. All you have to do is to stay with him or her when he or she needs you the most, even if he or she doesn't realize the same.

3. Understanding. Some say that bipolar disorder is beyond being understood. It is, after all, a disease characterized by unreasonable tendencies. Nonetheless, you should understand that the teenaged subject is suffering from a "disorder." As much as it is easy to surmise that he or she has control over his or her actions during these episodes, the fact is, he or she does not. Always keep this in mind when dealing with a teenager suffering from bipolar disorder.
